Robert Michael Shaw è nato nel 1937, non lontano da dove la sua famiglia si stabilì a New York City nella metà del XIX secolo. Dopo aver assolto agli obblighi militari nel 1958, ha intrapreso una vita di pittura che ha visto pochissime interruzioni. Anche se Shaw ha mantenuto studi a NewYork e Chicago, la maggior parte della sua carriera artistica si è svolta all'estero. Ha vissuto e dipinto i luoghi molto diversi, dalle Isole Vergini, a Palma di Maiorca, dalle isole greche, al Messico, alle Ande peruviane. Dal1980 risiede con sua moglie permanentemente in Italia. Attualmente vivono in un vecchio molino del ’300 nella campagna intorno a Pienza in provincia di Siena. Robert Michael Shaw segue la lunga strada tradizionale della pittura “en-plein-air” che, alla sua mente, si richiama nelle opere della piena maturità di Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, dei primi anni del XIX secolo, in modo particolare nei dipinti degli anni ’20 di Roma e della campagna circostante. Come molti grandi pittori paesaggisti tradizionali del passato, Shaw lavora esclusivamente sul posto, assorbendo la luce e l'atmosfera che lo circondano. Questo gli fornisce una profonda e precisa conoscenza del soggetto e, quindi, la possibilità di rendere omaggio alla bellezza incontaminata del paesaggio toscano senza dover ricorrere alla fantasia o al sentimentalismo.
Robert è morto nella ormai sua Toscana il 24 settembre 2023.

Robert Michael Shaw was born in 1937, not far from where his family settled in New York City, in the mid-nineteenth century. After completing his military service in 1958, he embarked upon a lifetime of painting that has seen very few interruptions. Although Shaw has maintained studios in new York City and Chicago, the major part of his artistic career has been lived abroad. He has lived and painted in such diverse places at the U.S. Virgin lslands, Palma de Majorca, Spain, Mexico, the Greek islands and Peruvian Andes. Since 1980, he and his wife have been full-time residents of ltaly and currently live in an early 14th century millhouse in the countryside near Pienza in Siena province. Robert Michael Shaw follows a long, traditional road of en plein-air painting that, to his mind, carne to full maturity in the works of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, in the early 19th century. Nowhere is that opinion more borne out than in Corot’s paintings of Rome and surrounding country side, in the 1820’s. Like many of the great traditional landscape painters of the past, Shaw insists upon working exclusively on location, absorbing the light and atmosphere that surround his every day life. This provides him with an intimate knowledge and rapport with his subject, thus enabling him to pay homage to the unspoiled beauty of the Tuscan landscape without resorting to either fantasy or sentimentality.
Robert died in his now Tuscany on 24 September 2023.
